DBug single disk releases

October 12, 2006 by JamesRC

News illustration image D-Bug, producers of superlative compact disks and "constructive critics" of the Gamebase ST project, have been quietly releasing some very nice single disk cracks over the last few weeks.

Starglider II, Backlash, RVF Honda and Live and Let Die have all already been released, and there's no sign that they plan on stopping there.

What makes these cracks special? They're all 100% MegaSTE and Falcoln compatible, fully hard drive installable, and come with a free car[1]!

You can head on over to D-Bug's own news page to download these gifts, in less time than it will take you to write me a nasty email about the "constructive critics" jab.

[1] The bit about the free car is a lie.

October 3, 2006 by Marcer

News illustration image To celebrate the latest version of maxYMiser, and to answer the requests of maxYMiser users, I announce a competition for maxYMiser music!

Any style or effects are allowed, as long as the music is playable on a standard Atari ST or STe.

Entries from emulator users and non-sceners are strongly encouraged!

The deadline is on the 4th December 2006, and there will be a decent prize for the winner. The winner will be decided by a public voting relating to a demo and MP3 release of the music in mid-December.

There are hardly any rules, but for more information visit the compo website or send an email.

Thanks, and good luck to all entering!

ST Frontier now for PCs

September 28, 2006 by JamesRC

News illustration image There are dozens of remakes of ST era games floating around on the giant combination curiosity shop and flea market that is the Internet. There are so many, in fact, that any attempt at a list of them would no doubt immediately consume all the space on the Atari Legend server, bringing down the site, and indeed all other sites hosted within a twenty mile radius, as well as leaving the administrators with a bandwidth bill equal to the net worth of two small nations.

So I best not do that, eh?

What is worth a mention, however, is Tom Morton's lovely GLFrontier. What Tom has done is to have taken one part original disassembled ST Frontier code, one part lovely open source Hatari code, a dash of GL and 3D lighting spice, and whisked the whole thing together in a big bowl before baking for a few months at 400 degrees.

The result is a Windows (or indeed Linux) version of the classic Elite II - Frontier which is based upon the original ST code, and yet can run faster and in higher resolutions, to boot!

You can grab a copy at his website, and really, why wouldn't you?

Random review

Three dimensional gaming on an Atari machine was an altogether mediocre experience. Games like Castle Master pushed the genre to its boundaries, while other titles barely justified the use of the contemporary graphic structure. However some individuals saw the potential in a truly 3D environment, one such pioneer was Paul Woakes- creator of Mercenary.

Did you know?

What does ST stand for? Some people believe it is an abbreviation of "Sam Tramiel", head of Atari. Others say it is short for "16 32", cause the ST was the first in a line of 16 - 32 bit computers by Atari!
