I remember that I somehow was dissapointed by the conversion compared to the c-64 one... and if I remember correctly it did not work on an STE machine... atleast not on mine...

Actually, this conversion is very close to the arcade original.
Also, technically, the game does well: Scrolling is okay, there's quite a number of sprites on screen, controls are good and collision detection is fair.
How come the game has not been rated very well when it's so close to the arcade original ?
Simply because the arcade original is far too tame and so is the ST version.
If you want a fast and furious version of Commando, you need to play the C64- or ZX Spectrum conversions.
